Making of Dr. GPT Harvey, I want you to tell a story in a way that think of me right now in medical school. And I want to become Dr. GPT. Tell me what should I do, what should I not do, and then how to prepare myself as a physician in an AI world.
Harvey:
How did this whole Dr. GPT start? know, looking back, I don't want to go way too back, but it really starts with the core of who I am. At the end of the day, as you, we want to serve people. We want to do things that are going to change mankind, that are going to help people. And I know that sounds really, yeah, yeah, you're a doctor. No, no, it comes from a humble beginning. I literally come from zero, come from actually negative. My mom was a teenager when she had me. grew up in New York City and literally in my mind, she gave me the tools to succeed and she never told me I could never do nothing. She always said, Harvey, you can become someone. You can be the president if you want. You can be a congressman. And in a good way, she brainwashed me to the point where I didn't know that I was quote unquote at a disadvantage until way, way after I had graduated and already practicing medicine, it kind of dawned on me. so jumping with that core heart, that servant heart, that really has opened the doors for where I am today. So just quick background. At one point I developed 20 emergency rooms. I packaged eight of them. had my own emergency room, my own staffing, my own billing, hospitals, urgent cares. And I don't say to just boast. I say it because that servant heart, that goal, that culture to serve really made that company grow. And if it wasn't that, culture to make sure that we did everything we could for our patients, that wouldn't have grown. And people were driving from all over DFW to come to our locations because they knew the quality and the culture was to give. Going back to the doctors, like that question you had, like, hey, I want to be like Dr. Castro. First is going to say, find your passion, find your why. Why are you doing this? Why are you working? Why are we up early in the morning giving these talks?
It's because of our why, our heart, our goal is to give. And so with that in mind, this office, it was November, 2022. And I was in this computer on this screen and this thing called ChatGPT popped up and I'm like, what the heck is this? I started asking it questions and within five minutes, it's not like I died, but my whole life flashed and I thought, oh my gosh, if I had this tool throughout my career, I would have killed it. Not that I didn't do well, I did very well, but I really think I would have just like beyond killed it. And literally within five minutes, I said, I'm gonna write a book. How can we use chat GPT and healthcare? How can we put it together and give it all these examples? And this was the year 2022. That book literally in a way blessed me to the day and it's all a domino. That book cause world stages to start calling me, literally all over the world, people were calling me like, Harvey, what is this ChatGPT? Famous influencers were coming to me saying, hey Harvey, I wanna hear you speak. And you see, it wasn't me, it was my combination of doctor of over 20 years, my combination of starting over 20 companies, the entrepreneur, and then this thirst for knowledge, which at the time was learning about AI and it still continues. And I put all three worlds together. And then I started speaking from my passion, from my heart, how can I serve? And I started coming up with ideas that people were like, Harvey, I haven't seen this in a textbook. Hey, I haven't seen this in news. Where are you finding this stuff? And I'm like, it's the combination of how I see the world and how I present it. One of the core foundations of AI, it's human plus AI working together. But it's not just any AI, it's you knowing the good, bad, the ugly of the AI.
So when this thing hallucinates you, the human being are able to mold it. But then you, that entrepreneur in you, that clinical gestalt, what makes you you, that uniqueness put together with AI, now you're gonna create something bigger than yourself, than you alone or the AI alone.
Junaid:
I'm just going to be honest with you. I run a Savealife as a company. I have eight AI engineers. It is getting difficult for me personally to keep up. It's just becoming overwhelming. I'm just going to be honest with you. How do you deal with that mental pressure? I mean, I have a growth mindset, but man, I cannot grow that fast.
Harvey:
Honestly, it's about your culture and your network. You see some people that are like, uh, Harvey, don't want AI and that's fine. You have other things that you love and you pursue. You and I are blessed in that we already like what we do. A quick analogy is it's not worked for us because we love it, right? Now, the other part is like minds end up being together. You know, they always say, me your five closest people and I'll tell you really similar who you are and it really makes you up. My conversations are a lot about AI. The circles I'm in are AI.
The forums are in AI. And then the nice thing, I get a little spoiled. I really appreciate everybody that follows me on social media because I get all these messages from you guys and it really helps me because again, it takes a village and if I want to help the world, it's going to be a village to do this. And so what I mean by that is I get fun texts from people and hey, have you seen this article? Hey, have you done that? And sometimes I haven't. And it's great, especially if I started getting multiple texts from the same topic. I'm like, okay, whoa, this must have not hit my radar somehow. What happened? But then I use technology like you. I'm using AI agents to go online and there are certain things that is researching. This morning, Fox News released an article and I just posted it on my LinkedIn, but the skinny is a man that used bromide as a salt substitute ended up in the hospital because AI told him to use bromide. so again, just to show you it's that servant heart Fox News reaches out to me because they know that if there's something I'm gonna give and I'm gonna work and I'm gonna do it for free, because again, it's just that giving. So when you do things, do it because it's your passion, but I'm gonna encourage you, don't look at the dollar signs, try not to say, my God, this is gonna make me a dollar. Look at it more like, this I'm going to give, and if I get back, right, and if I don't, it's okay. Find the reward in your giving. If you can change your mindset in just that giving mode, you'll see that things in follow. And again, you don't do it to receive, you do it to give. And then if it happens, right, and if it doesn't, that's okay because the reward was already given to you by you giving. Yesterday, this is such an honor. I was able to speak to the largest healthcare system in Brazil. It was the C-suite.
Harvey:
It was a top executives for the company and they recorded it and they're going to give it out to all 60,000 employees. But the part that I got so excited again, it wasn't because I got paid to speak. It was because I got a text from the CEO saying, because of your lecture, we got all these ideas and we're going to start implementing some of those ideas in AI at our hospital in Brazil. I got chills. was like, my gosh, I got to help the world. I literally got to change healthcare in a positive way. And it's the biggest one in Brazil. And Brazil's not a small country. So now I gotta practice my Portuguese. Just joking.
Junaid:
So now let's talk about Harvey. So you looked at this, you used the ChatGPT, and now finally, after years, they brought in the open access as GPT-OSS. But then you wrote that book and then you were invited to Singapore. So tell me about that.
Harvey:
Yeah, so this is another, it's all a domino. HIMSS had a specific AI healthcare in San Diego. They called me, they're like, Harvey, we heard you spoke in Portugal. We loved it because I was the European HIMSS person and we want you to do the same in San Diego. So I speak, I come off stage and then the manager says, hey, the Ministry of Health is here. And they asked specifically to speak to you after they just heard you speak.
Would you have lunch with them? And he's like, Harvey, that was very interesting. I've never heard any of those things. And I keep up with this. Can you do that for my country? Will you be an advisor for the country of Singapore? And I'm like, my gosh, what an opportunity. Who says no? I was like, I was like, sure. He's like, I'll work on the contract. I will send it to you and we will cover everything for you to be in Singapore and we'll take care of you and there'll be meetings, blah, blah. And so it's really cool.
So let me tell you what happened the last time, what I'm allowed to share. I was in the room, think of it, I was in front of like the FDA, medical devices, people for Singapore, the heads. And they showed me a plan and I was able to look at it and I said, okay, as a doctor, please take out 0.2, seven and six. These things are gonna piss off your doctors. It's not gonna go well. Let's modify these points like this because I put them in my doctor hat.
Then I looked at their AI plan and I said, whoa, whoa, whoa, you've spent so much money. There's no need for this. We need to change these algorithms. We need to work on the following AI and you want to contribute money on XYZ. And once you create this infrastructure workflow, you're going to save so much money. You're going to be good. And then they were going to show some regulation. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, no, no, On the regulation piece, we need to modify it with the following criteria. They ended up doing everything I said.
And it's not because of me, it's because of the clinical experience. I'm wearing a doctor hat, I'm wearing an AI hat, I'm wearing a consumer hat. I do want to be a congressman one day. So was able to put all worlds together and speak to them. And the value that they got of me just talking through those things were huge because they would have to get different consultants, different people, and then they would all have to agree.
And then being able to just talk to one person to say, it is, this is how it is. It helps. Plus, I'm not a Singapore citizen, so I'm not biased. I'm not, no one's buying me out to do X, Y, Z, cause it's not my country.
Junaid:
What's next Harvey in the Journey?
Harvey:
So then I'm like you, I'm competitive, but it's against myself. It's not really against others. And I had been on TV over 150 times. had done Fox news, again, the servant heart.
I called all the local Loo stations during COVID and I said, hey, you guys need a doctor. There's, hate watching the news. I feel like I'm going to die. I get depressed. Put me on TV because I want to be that light. I want to give that animation. I want to give to the community. And my gosh, I was on TV five to seven times a day, but that gave me a huge skillset to be able to turn on the camera and know that I was live and that I didn't know the questions and I had to speak in soundbites. I had to speak concise. couldn't.
I like a doctor, I had to speak at a certain level. But anyway, the thing is, I had to speak. And May of last year, I was like, wait a second, I probably need a TED Talk. And so here's the spiritual part of me. I had a friend of mine said, Harvey, apply to these 10. I had already applied to 10, didn't get anything. And she's like, apply to these 10. I applied, and I kid you not, one of them in my heart said, Harvey, that's your TED Talk.
I was so convicted that that particular one was my TED Talk that I call my business partner, loved ones, family members.
And I said, I know this sounds crazy, but reserve this week in October because I really think that's when I'm gonna give a TED Talk on AI and healthcare. Fast forward, I gave that TED Talk. And then when I got home, again, the doctor, me is really OCD. I was like, man, it was good, but it didn't kill it. I didn't do what I wanted to. And I applied for a bunch more. And as a result, I ended up getting three more. I was like pulling my hair. was like, whoa, this is way, way more stressful. But here's the take home point. It pushed me to learn how to speak. It pushed me to learn how to give back. And the stakes were too high because now I knew I was gonna be on huge venues and I didn't wanna disappoint because my mission again, it's not about me is how can I use this message, AI and healthcare, and how can I give back? And that passion, I wanted to make sure was recorded. And so if you have time, watch those. And now as a result, someone from TED Talk reached out to me saying, we're looking at you for possibly this fall for a TED Talk, not a TEDx, a TED Talk. And I'm like, wow, I'm gonna be in the circles of like Steve Jobs and-
Harvey:
Microsoft leaders and like people around the world like, whoa, just just being this offer to me, I'm already humbled. Like if I don't get it, I'm like, wow, like they were considering me.
Like this is awesome. So then the story continues and I do want to reflect. There's a book called Success Reinvention. It's my core book of who I am, the lessons that my mother taught me, why I am who I am today is because my mother, that teenage woman that had a GED education made me in principles of what she taught me is why I'm successful. Now obviously God as well First God now with that said I want to talk about the company behind me Phantom Space you see by the year ago One of my colleagues is like Harvey There's only seven astronauts in the world that have walked on the moon and one of them is here in Dallas And I want you to hear him speak and I'm gonna get you a front pass to meet him I was like, who's going to say no to meet a freaking astronaut that walked on the moon? Like I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid. I was like, this is cool. So I'm there. The guy sits next to me before he speaks and I'm having dinner with him. I'm like, my gosh, I'm hearing stories of Neil Armstrong and about life and all this. And I'm like geeking out. I'm like, this is like so freaking cool. I'm like, this is the best night ever. Well, more comes to the story.
Harvey:
A company called SpaceX started by Elon Musk had two individuals that were key to him, Jim Cantrell and the basically, and then the other guy was Tom who did the Falcon that goes up and down. anyway, long story short, these guys, one worked with Elon Musk for 12 years and literally ran the space program, specifically the rocket engineering. These are the guys who were on the plane to Russia to buy rockets and they couldn't buy the rockets and they were like, Elon, let's just build a thing. And so they did.
And so to me, to be in the presence of these guys, I'm like, holy cow, like this is crazy. So then the story goes, the CEO was there and he's like, Harvey, I have heard all these things about you, about AI. Will you be an advisor for my space company? I was like, again, I'm like, I'm not gonna say no to that like, heck yes. And so then I started working with him and I started looking at the company and I started looking under the hood and I'm like, my gosh, this isn't just a simple company. I'm going to come out of semi-retirement. I called him and I said, hey, I will be a spokesman for you. Hire me to be your spokesman. I want to be your rep. my gosh. I am humble to what he said next. He said, Harvey, I've been dying for you to come on board.
If you come on board, I want to make you my chief artificial intelligence officer, flight surgeon, and partner at the C-suite with me. Amazing. I was like, my God. And so then I said, well, what do you want me to do? he's like, Harvey, do your AI here, teach us your AI. And then this is the part that really exciting. He said, have fun with healthcare. I have, if you want a division in healthcare, let's build it. And so now I'm literally building a couple of concepts and I'm already getting funding for it. And it's going to be AI healthcare, leveraging edge computing from the satellites, and then creating applications for earth for the entire world.
Junaid:
Whoa. And I know I haven't shared that with you, but that is crazy. I That was a surprise.
We were waiting and then of course we got busy and traveling but I'm so so congratulations congratulations and then again your success means so much to us to me especially too because now I learn things and look exactly that's why we're doing the podcast even me sitting here he is definitely 10 years ahead of me but he's given me so much inspiration today and that's what we want that's why we share these stories
